"Arachno-copta" Improved Bed Warmer

< previous work next work >

(Click on any image to enlarge)

I found this prototype for an improved design copper bedwarmer (incorporating its own self-heating boiler and extensive warming network to reach all corners of the bed) in appalling condition at the back of the old JCB factory in Birmingham, and lovingly restored it to the condition you see here.
You could believe that, or you could believe that I've just finished making it, with thoughts of encroaching autumn & winter, and climbing into a cold empty bed at night... either way, I'd be happy!

Materials: JCB copper bed warmer, brass, copper, grease gun
Dimensions: 22" x 18" x 13" (56cm x 46cm x 33cm)
Weight: 3lb (1.5kg)

This piece was shown at the Rowland Emett Society Convention, and at the North Wall Arts Centre, Oxford. It was also displayed as part of the Oxfordshire Artweeks exhibition, and at the Tetbury Sculpture Exhibition, the Buckinghamshire Arts Society Spring Exhibition, and the Savill Garden. In September 2017, it will shown at Kempton Steam Museum in London.

It has recently featured on the front cover of the Surrey Sculpture Society magazine "Limited Edition" - see here. You can read the associated article in the magazine (2.8Mb PDF) here.
